A day of inspiration and skills for Alumni who want to start or develop a children's choir in their area.

This first Alumni Choir Kickstarter Day is the idea of NYCGB Alumna and Alumni Committee Member Charlotte Mobbs, now an established professional singer with ensembles including The Sixteen.

Having discovered a lack of quality local singing opportunities for her two children, Charlotte has arranged this day of inspiration and practical skills for other NYCGB Alumni who would like to start or develop a local youth choir suitable for children in Key Stages 1-2.

The day will be held at the National Youth Training Choir's Summer course venue at the Royal Masonic School for Girls in Rickmansworth, and will include opportunities to observe course rehearsals and activities.

No prior experience or skills is necessary, and you do not need to be committed to starting a choir in your area - though we hope you will be by the end of the day!

Please note that this day is primarily intended for NYCGB Alumni, but we would also be delighted to welcome friends/colleagues of NYCGB Alumni as their guests.

  • Charlotte Mobbs enjoys a career as a soloist and ensemble singer performing with many of the UK’s finest conductors. She is a member of The Sixteen, featuring on many of the group’s recordings, and a vocal coach for The Sixteen’s own training scheme, Genesis Sixteen. She is also a singing teacher for NYCGB and has been involved with the organisation for 28 years!
  • Greg Beardsell is Deputy Artistic Director of NYCGB and a leading light in music education performance. In addition to his work for NYCGB he is Music Director of the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland, the Peace Proms, the London Youth Chamber Choir, and the Irish Youth Choir, and is also establishing a reputation as a broadcaster and adjudicator.
  • Susan Young is a versatile, accomplished singer and passionate voice teacher. Her wide-ranging stage (English National Opera, Opera Holland Park), concert and recital experience is matched by her commitment to tuition which encompasses young and developing voices from primary school age to University. She is a regular course singing teacher for NYCGB.
  • Shelly Ambury is Head of Learning at Sing Up, a national charity which promotes and supports singing in schools through resources, tools and services. A hugely experienced leader and trainer, Shelly is passionate about empowering teachers with the confidence, skills and knowledge to support children in developing their singing and music-making skills.
  • Tori Longdon is in demand as a choral workshop leader and adjudicator, leading inter-school projects for Hounslow and Slough music services and one of The Voices Foundation's flagship 'singing schools'.
