The National Youth Chamber Choir are joining the Tallis Scholars in the 'Young Performer Spotlight' for Live From London Christmas, a festival created by the VOCES8 Foundation to reunite the world's singers and bring live music to audiences during the coronavirus crisis.

Gaudete: Like so many of the greatest works of art from the Renaissance period our Christmas programme focuses on the central figures of the Madonna and Child, the inspiration for Tallis's most gilded of mass settings. The third Sunday in Advent, Gaudete Sunday, has at its heart the theme of rejoicing "Rejoice in the Lord always": Sheppard takes up both of these themes and elaborates upon them in his extraordinary Gaude, Gaude, Gaude (Rejoice, Rejoice, Rejoice), a tour-de-force of exotic polyphony, peppered with gimells. Britten's Hymn to the Virgin and Pärt's Bogoroditse devo (Rejoice, mother of God) reflect this uplifting theme of praise. Returning to the central figure of the Madonna to close the lid on this trove of Renaissance treasures, Spanish master Victoria paints Mary’s words in the Magnificat in startling, double-choir, technicolour “My soul doth magnify the Lord”.
