The National Youth Girls’ Choir are embarking on a voyage of musical discovery taking them to the four corners of the globe. Featuring songs that span the centuries as well as encompassing a variety of different cultures, they are showcasing the breadth of music written for women’s voices. As well as well-loved choral classics such as Monteverdi’s Pulchra Es from his Vespers of 1610, and Schubert’s The Lord is my Shepherd, there is contemporary music from Australian composer Katy Abbott, Swedish a cappella ensemble the Real Group and Canadian composer-arranger Stephen Hatfield. The programme also includes settings of indigenous music from Scandinavia, Africa, China and North America as well as popular music from the USA and UK. The concert includes world premieres of specially-written pieces by Harry Baker and Lillie Harris, who are part of the 2019 NYCGB Young Composers’ Scheme.
