To audition for our choirs, you must be the correct age and be a British citizen and resident in the UK, the Channel Islands, or Isle of Man.

National Youth Boys’ Choir (including changing voices*)

(If in School Years 5, 6 & 7 at audition)

  • Demonstrate potential for improvement and enthusiasm for singing
  • Sing in tune, with a keen ear
  • Respond quickly to basic pitch and rhythm games

(If in School Years 8, 9 & 10 at audition)

  • All of the above plus the ability to respond to basic technical demands
  • Show basic sight-reading skills

Boys undergoing voice change are welcome! If you're successful at audition, we'll give you a place in Cambiata Voices, which is part of the National Youth Boys' Choir and is our specialist ensemble for emerging tenors, baritones and basses. All Boys' Choir members get a vocal assessment at the beginning of each course to ensure that you're allocated the voice part which best fits your current stage of development.

National Youth Girls’ Choir

(If in School Years 6 & 7 at audition)

  • Demonstrate potential for improvement and enthusiasm for singing
  • Sing with a clear, clean sound; reasonably free from breathiness
  • Sing in tune with awareness of intonation
  • Demonstrate basic sight-reading skills

(If in School Years 8, 9 & 10 at audition)

  • All of the above plus the ability to respond to basic technical demands
  • Sing with a clear, non-breathy voice
  • Demonstrate sight-reading skills including awareness of key signatures and melody including arpeggios as well as scales

National Youth Training Choir

(If in School Years 9 & 10 at audition)

  • Sing with exceptional vocal ability for your age
  • Sing with expression and musical intelligence
  • Demonstrate more advanced sight-reading skills (ABRSM grade 3/4)

(If in School Years 11, 12 & 13 at audition)

  • Sing with secure vocal quality and the ability to respond to technical work within the choir
  • Demonstrate an individual and expressive voice
  • Sing with secure intonation and the absence of intrusive vibrato
  • Sight-read at level ABRSM grade 5 or above

National Youth Choir

(Applicants who are 18 years old up to, and including, those aged 24 on 31st August in the year of auditioning are eligible)

  • Sing difficult music with conviction and accuracy
  • Make an impression on the choir’s sound, combining individuality with the ability to listen and blend
  • Sight-read to ABRSM grade 6-7 or above
  • Sing without insecurity of pitch or vibrato
  • Perform with confidence, manifested in good posture, strong singing and the courage to take risks
  • Sing completely free of breathiness
  • Demonstrate the flexibility to blend and to change the sound
  • Sing without nasality (except when requested)
