NYCGB Part of Royal Albert Hall's 150th Birthday Celebrations! Over 100 Singers from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain Take Part in Royal Albert Hall's 150th Birthday Celebrations! This March, the Royal Albert Hall turns 150; NYCGB Choirs have performed on its stage for more than twenty-five years. Since then, our organisations have enjoyed a close and prosperous relationship and we’re thrilled to be part of the 150th Birthday celebrations of ‘the Nation’s village hall’ this year. The National Youth Choir’s first appearance was in a Gala Concert in 1985 where they performed alongside the City of Sheffield Girls’ Choir. Over the years NYCGB has performed numerous times in Carols at the Royal Albert Hall (most recently alongside our friends at the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Choral Society, with Conductor Richard Cooke) and the BBC Proms. Other noteworthy performances include the world premiere of Sir Karl Jenkins’ The Armed Man and the Millennium Youth Prom alongside other National Youth Music Organisations in 2000, Classic FM Live in 2006, Worldsong in 2012, Monteverdi’s Vespers in 2013, a concert featuring all five NYCGB choirs and ‘A Kylie Christmas’ with Kylie Minogue, Dannii Minogue, Chrissie Hynde and company in 2015, Imaginations in 2016 and the International Youth Choirs Festival (in partnership with Royal Albert Hall) in 2017. Younger members of the National Youth Girls’, Boys’ and Training Choirs performed in the Christmas concert series My Great Orchestral Adventure in 2019. NYCGB hosts its Annual Showcase Event at the Royal Albert Hall to celebrate the achievements of our Young Composers and Fellowship and announce our programme and plans for the year ahead. The Royal Albert Hall has been a dedicated supporter of NYCGB’s auditions programme over a number of years, supporting us in reaching a diverse UK-wide demographic of talented young singers. David Arnold, internationally renowned for his scores for multiple James Bond films, Independence Day and Sherlock, has turned his compositional genius to create a work in collaboration with participants from the Royal Albert Hall’s community to celebrate their 150th birthday. Workshops with participants from local primary and secondary schools, a FE music college, sheltered housing schemes and Chelsea Pensioners at the Royal Hospital explored themes from the Hall’s history, and the concept of its identity as a symbol of community and hope. David attended workshops engaging with participants, and their ideas will be reflected in the final composition. A Circle of Sound will be performed in summer 2021 by professional musicians in Albert’s Orchestra, over 100 singers from the National Youth Choir of Great Britain and local schools. It will take place in the Royal Albert Hall, with 10 musical movements to represent major moments and themes from the Hall’s history such as the women’s suffrage movement, science and sports, and will end with a joyful vision of the Hall’s future and its importance for future generations. We look forward to enabling many more talented young singers to appear on the Royal Albert Hall’s famous stage and to a long and prosperous partnership to come.
