TWELVE EMERGING ARTISTS TO WATCH

National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB) is excited to introduce twelve exciting new artists who following the completion of a year-long professional development scheme with the organisation are now looking to develop their careers as composers, singers and choral leaders. The Fellowship programme, running since 2015 and Young Composers Scheme founded in 2019, offer young professional choral leaders and composers an outstanding and unparalleled year of professional development and mentoring.

2020 Young Composers: Joe Bates, Amy Bryce, Nathan James Dearden and Lisa Robertson

2020 Fellows: James Botcher, Ellie Bray, Freddie Crowley, Loren Kell, Laurence Padfield, Ella Rainbird-Earley, Milette Riis and David Woods.


New Music

NYCGB Fellowship 2020 recorded tracks released throughout the year. Some of which (The Aldeburgh Carol and new pieces by the Young Composers), were recorded in person during a brief relaxation of the lockdown restrictions at Snape Maltings in late October, kindly supported by Britten Pears Arts. 

  • A digital album of new compositions by NYCGB Young Composers of 2020 released in January by NMC Recordings, featuring tracks: Amy Bryce A Strange Time and Place, Nathan James Dearden Morals + Interludes, Joe Bates Now is a Long Time and Lisa Robertson to tell it like it is.

  • Ben Parry & Garth Bardsley’s The Aldeburgh Carol, along with members of the National Youth Chamber Choir. Specially recorded for VOCES8 Foundation’s Live From London Christmas Festival, featured in the ‘Young Performers’ Spotlight’ alongside the Tallis Scholars.

2020 Highlights

  • Online workshops with partners including Dorico, Stainer & Bell, Stay at Home Choir and AOTOS and guests / mentors including Jacob Collier, Dame Sarah Connolly, Errollyn Wallen, John Rutter, Roxanna Panufnik and The Swingles.

  • Young Composers creative retreats at The Red House, Aldeburgh, former home of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears, creating new music / accessing Britten Pears archives, thanks to Britten Pears Arts.

  • NYCGB new partnership with Choir & Organ as ‘2021 New Music Series Partner’. The composers have been commissioned to write new works for choir or organ, which will continue through 2021.

  • NYCGB Young Composers exciting new partnerships with Steinberg Media Technologies and Stainer & Bell.
