Dear Friends,

We are more than just a choir: we are a community with a shared passion for singing and the life-changing musical opportunities it can offer.

Since the first group of talented young singers came together to form the National Youth Choir back in 1983, thousands of young singers from an increasingly diverse range of backgrounds have grown and developed with us, many of whom have gone on to pursue their talent for singing at a professional level, form and lead choirs in their communities and bring joy to thousands more through their shared passion. Due to the current unprecedented international crisis, we have taken the difficult decision to cancel our Spring and Summer activities, for the first time in our long and prestigious history.

Though the current challenges have put a significant financial strain on NYCGB, we are determined to come through this and ensure that we not only keep our members, and the nation, singing but also sustain the wonderful talents of our staff during this international crisis. To enable this, we have been delivering free online digital activities for our members this past spring and will be delivering online courses for all our members this summer, which will musicianship webinars, live feeds, group social events and virtual choir rehearsals and recordings. This has all been made possible by our amazing team of permanent and freelance staff.

Whilst we are all too aware that countless musicians, many of them NYCGB alumni, are currently facing severe impending financial hardship, we appealed to you, our supporters, friends, customers and alumni to help us in the longer term and donate to our Keep the Nation Singing appeal. Through your collective generosity you donated a staggering £25,195, which alongside other funding and government help schemes enabled us to reduce our year-end (30 September 2020) deficit to around £95,000. We are all incredibly grateful and moved by your generosity, which has not only helped us stay open but also kept up our community engaged and singing throughout this crisis.

A huge thank you to you all from all of us at NYCGB.
