The National Youth Choir (9-15 Years) is for male and non-binary singers with unchanged voices (trebles), and young people whose voices are changing who sing in our specialist ensemble called Cambiata Voices; both trebles and those with changing voices attend the same courses.

We passionately believe that choral singing is for everyone and strongly encourage all talented young singers from all backgrounds and musical styles to audition. As a member you’ll have the best choral training possible including unbeatable opportunities to develop skills in music, performance, recording, leadership and teamwork, and to grow in confidence and aspiration. You’ll sing alongside the most gifted young singers in the UK, developing your skills to the highest level, and making life-long friends.

  • Take part in up to two amazing residential courses a year full of music, learning opportunities, social activities, together with 100-150 great young singers of your age. Find out more about the commitment here.
  • Inspiring and friendly conductors, teachers and pastoral staff to guide your vocal and musical development, and to look after you.
  • Inspiring concerts around the UK in venues like the Royal Albert Hall, Birmingham Town Hall & Sage Gateshead, performing everything from traditional choral music to brand-new pieces.
  • From school year 11 you can audition to progress to the National Youth Choir (15-18 Years)

We all study together on our residential courses and we sing a broad range of challenging music. At our concerts we like to mix it up, so some pieces are performed by just trebles, some by just Cambiata Voices and some works where we join forces. At the beginning of each course the music staff check how boys are getting on vocally and decide which voice part they will sing for that residential course and concert. You will be guided by our expert vocal tutors to help develop your voice and we help boys whose voices are changing to progress in a natural and unforced way.

What we sing

The pieces we sing are varied and will challenge singers of all levels of experience in different ways. Our repertoire covers a wide range of musical styles to help singers develop musical literacy and awareness. Music is often set to a text in a foreign language. We include musicianship sessions on our courses to build and reinforce your pitching and rhythm.

Where we perform

The National Youth Choir (9-15 Years) - Male & Non-Binary performs both independently and collaboratively with other National Youth Choir ensembles and programmes at venues around the UK. Recent highlights include special digital commissions Just Being ME  by Ben Parry and Open Your Mind with SK Shlomo. Previous highlights include the world premiere of Jonathan Dove's Friday Afternoons at the Royal Albert Hall, and contributions to National Youth Choir's critically-acclaimed recording of choral music by Benjamin Britten.
