National Youth Choir alumni are graduates from across the choir’s 40-year history, including doctors, nurses, teachers, conductors, CEOs as well as professional singers from The Swingles, BBC Singers, The Sixteen, Tenebrae, Gabrieli Consort, Monteverdi Choir, Glyndebourne, Scottish Opera and Royal Opera House Choruses and come together from as far afield as America, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Germany. Image: A P Wilding, via Harlequin Agency 2 July 2018 NYCGB Alumna Angharad Lyddon has been chosen to represent Wales in the world-famous BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition 2019. The mezzo-soprano, who sang with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain in the 2000s, will join 19 other young contestants from around the world in Cardiff next June. Past winners of the competition include the late Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Danish soprano Inger Dam-Jensen and US mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton. Winners of the competition's Song Prize and Audience Prize include Irish soprano Ailish Tynan, South African baritone Jacques Imbrailo and Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel. Angharad's selection was announced at the conclusion of the Welsh Singer Showcase competition held at St David's Hall in Cardiff on Saturday night. Five singers competed, all accompanied by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales under Gareth Jones. The Cardiff Singer of the World competition lasts a week. Four 'group stage' concerts are held first, with the winners plus a jury-nominated 'wild card' going through to the final. The winner receives the Cardiff Singer of the World trophy, a cash prize of £15,000, and career-changing exposure. Angharad told NYCGB: I was not expecting to win the showcase at all! The other four finalists were superb and all of their performances were of such a high standard. When Della Jones announced my name I thought it was someone else and it couldn’t possibly be me! Then I burst into tears and the next 10 minutes were very surreal as I shook everyone’s hands, lifted the trophy and sang the national anthem. I’m incredibly honoured to be representing Wales in this prestigious competition. I’ve been dreaming of having this opportunity since I watched the competition as a teenager but never thought it would become a reality. I hope I can make Wales proud.
